I just got the mounting plates from Trail Gear for the sliders i bought. The plates have the holes for either bolting or using self tapping screws. I was gonna use the screws along with welding it, just to be safe. Does anyone have a info on what kind of screws to use? Ive looked them up online but saw quite a few many different styles and Im not sure which ones to use?
So any ideas?

Thanks,
donnie

If your going to weld it then why worry about the screws. If not then use bolts. I would not trust self tapping screws on sliders.

Because Im not 100% confident in my so called welding abilites, so a little more added insurance would be nice.

Ask Ted he lives in winchester and has a a welder plenty big enough. You might have to give him a rub and tug for it.

If not use bolts self drillers are not the way to go.

I've heard that if you bolt through the frame it will crush it. Is this true? I'm having a set of sliders made right now and need to figure out a way to mount them. I know that welding them to the frame is illegal but have any of you all had a problem getting through inspection with them welded?

I've seen Heep sliders that bolt on using factory holes and a couple of self tapping bolts. The self tapping stuff was cheesy, and I wouldn't trust it. Just weld them.

Yep, since the frame is hollow, it can crush a bit if bolted through the frame. That is, unless you weld a sleeve through the frame and then run the bolt through that.

Never heard anything about welding them on being illegal. Of all the mods that we do to our junk, I've never heard of anyone getting hassled for welded on sliders. But I've never had any sliders, so I don't have any first-hand experience.

Donnie,
I don't know Trail Gear as a vendor, but I don't think ANY self tapping screws are going to do you any good unless what you bought are glorified steps and you use them as such.
There are some bolt on sliders that can work on a boxed frame section, but usually they advise welding as well.
I'm with Big Perv(Armored) see if someone local, (Ted?) can burn them on for you.

Bolting to the frame will not crush it if you have either the sleaves Jason described or a strong backing plate that conforms to the frame.
Welding them to the frame isn't out of VA DOT spec either. There's nothing about that in the legal code. I've not been failed for mine, which are welded on my '03.

Burn 'em on and wheel the hell out of it!

yeah, self tapper's aren't worth a shit, i used them, and several have sheered off, so i spot welded them, along with bolts it's much better and i can still take out the bolts and cut the short welds
