Which truck where you? Which wheels do you have? you can run tall tires pretty much any of the rims, you're not gonna want to go TOO wide on some of the stock rims.

With 2 to 2.5 inches, you can run 265/75/R16 tires. You will have to pound the pinch weld.

Ditto what Ted said. With 2.5" of lift and 265's, you may or may not need to pound the pinch weld a little (more likely that you will... but nothing major). You'll be very happily surprised at how much more capable your rig is with a little height and slightly larger tires. It'd be a good idea to invest in sliders at the same time as the lift... wise, cheap insurance.

I've got an '03 d-cab. I've got about 1.5" lift in the front now and 265/75 r16's don't hit the body anywhere but do hit the frame at full crank and I see marks from rubbing on the upper arm as well. I'm on stock wheels, so something with a different backspacing would cure both of those, and I think that tire size would be fine. My rubbing's not so bad that I'm worried about damage.
285's are going to require some removal of plastic crap and pounding of metal to get to not rub the body and are really going to rub the frame on stock wheels. If you wheel it with 3" of lift and 285's, even if you pound some metal out, I bet you rub in some spots. It's just part and parcel.
End of story, I'd suggest 265/75's are the max unless you are willing to *modify* your body, buy new wheels, and, especially, regear.

Chris - 37's or nothing at all :P

He lives across the street from me, I am sure I can "modify" his body for him

I would not get anything smaller than a 33inch tire size (I am not sure of the metric size) I have 33's now and they seem to small to me

285/75R16 with some trimming of plastic pieces and a BFH for the metal pieces.

I missed you then i was only out on saturday.
Lots of people on here are running different wheels so make sure to get info on wheels like yours, especally with the same backspacing, different backspacing will rub in different places.
You could always just stick 33's in there space them far enough out not to rub the frame or suspension and cut away at anything else they rub
