Stiff new fines (http://www.examiner.com/printa-809165~Va._issues_first_$2,000-plus_tickets.html?cid=tool-print-top)for Virginia’s drivers meant to raise funds for a transportation package approved in the spring went into effect Sunday across the state.

Defenders respond that the fee is voluntary and targets only bad drivers.

huh? So you can choose or is it the judges discretion to impose the fee?

No, no, you can choose to obey the law or to risk the fine. If you obey the law then this has no impact on you. On the other hand, if you voluntarily choose to violate the law, then you deserve to pay.

In MD, the legislature considered rasing the gasoline tax. I suppose by the same logic, that too would be voluntary. You can choose to buy gas and pay the tax, or to not buy the gas and not drive.

BTW: Here is a list of the fees (http://www.courts.state.va.us/publications/hb_3202.pdf). I especially like 46.2-1077.01 OBSCENE VIDEO IMAGE VISIBLE OUTSIDE VEHICLE which is punishable by a fine of $300 per year for 3 years.

you for got the finwe of $100 for -8pionts on you lic. and $75 for each above that once a year until you fall below -8 points. oh yeah points stay on your record for 5 yrs... minimum fine of $500 in five years for tix that you got in 07 prior to july 1. i think we are getting screwed.

Well, this leadfoot with (miraculously) a clean license is slowing down. It's not worth all that crap. Good thing the 4Runner isn't fast and my speedo reads 5mph too fast :P

When I read the article, I was shocked. I don't get to VA much except for GWNF. But I wanted to alert people, so I posted on several sites. I probably should have looked to see if someone else had started a thread but I was in a rush.

In MD, they are taking a different approach. They are trying to raise the gas tax. Lovely.

I don't know which is better; huge fines which I am sure will be difficult to avoid or higher gas prices which are impossible to avoid.

We get alot of people from NJ getting their liscence's in PA and getting a PO box here and registering their cars here. The insurance drop is well worth it from what they say.

I think that the sales tax may be lower there also. In MD, the police go into the neighborhoods to look for out of state plates. Unless you can prove that you are in the military or a student, MD makes you pay MD sales tax to register the vehicle in the state, even if you have owned it for years.

Um your not trying to say they charge you sales tax for a vehicle bought else where are you? Cause thats illegal as it gets.

I am saying that they make you pay the tax regardless of when and where you bought the vehicle! If you move from PA to MD, you will have to pay the tax of 5% of the value of each vehicle to register it in MD. Doesn't matter that you have had them for years. It is the same for boats, BTW.
