This just happend to me on the 85 Runner, so I figured I would post here for reference.
My Charge and Brake light was flickering and then stayed on. I did a search on Pirate and found it was the Alternator. I started to take the Alternator off and noticed I had a busted wire. From the searches off of Pirate most people fixed their Alternator by replacing the Brushes. Here are some part number for a Brush Kit and its 10 bucks.
Autozone = 178-1669
Advance = 255047
Both were 1 day orders.
That does not fix it then replace the Voltage Requlator located behind the Glove Box.
Autozone = VR773 $55.99
That does not work then replace the Alternator.
