I am in the process of rebuilding my engine and I just broke a bolt. Do you think I can get away with out this bolt? See picture below. I need to remove the head to get the rest of the bolt out so I want to see what others say.

Bolt that holds front of head to timing cover

kind of hard to explain but, if you used gasket maker on the head gasket where the bolt goes , (between the head and timing cover and back to the block), I think you will be ok. The toyota book I got says to use a thin layer top and bottom on that part of the head gasket and a 1/8 inch in each corner.

I have a 1/8" or so of RTV on both sides on the timing cover section as the book tells you to do. I think it shoudl be fine but I am not 100% sure. If anything it will leak oil I think.

I did a headgasket on one at work that the bolt was broken like that. It was completely dry at that area. The owner said it was never done since he owned it. He said he had it for quite awhile.

Check to make sure you cant just thread the bolt outta the hole with the head on. Would really suck if it worked its way out while running.

I am going to try to get an easy out in the hole to see if I can remove the bolt. The bolt sheared even with the timing cover or just above so it is deep in the hole in the head.

A small left handed drill bit would be the best bet. Use a small center punch to center it and go very slow with the drill bit. If it bites it will spin the bolt right out 8) . Most times the bolt will thread out. If that doesnt work try a easy out.
