I'm comin up on my 100k service and don't have a clue on what should be changed out at this point. My truck is already tore apart in my garage because I gotta replace my alternator and belts. Anything else I should do while I already got it ripped apart?

I was contemplating replacing the water pump, I guess I will now. I thought the timing chain was not an issue on this motor......????? Is it the chain or the guides that should need fixin?
I guess I should get a new fan clutch while I'm at it also.

The timing chain is a consumable item on all engines. I would replace the water pump and oil pump when you change the chain. I think both are below 20 dollars to replace and need to be removed when you do the timing chain. Also if your kit does not come with a front main seal I would replace that too.

Ok, I've read a bunch of conflicting stuff on the NB. Some say change the timing chain at 120k, others say wait till the engine needs a rebuild. I'm kinda hesitant to do a timing chain since I've never done one before. Not sure if its beyond my capabilities or not...???? I don't wanna mess with it if its not necessary until XXXX mileage.
Anyone with experience on a 2.7L wanna help me out with me this? Wrenchin, advice etc..... :smt102

The only problem with waiting, is if it breaks you are going to destroy the engine

Paul, right now I got everything ripped apart to where the water pump can be replaced. I can have everything else tore apart by friday. If you can come down friday or saturday morning it should be a "relatively" straight forward job. That is If I get all my parts delivered on time.

G.D., At the rate I'm goin I should just tear down and rebuild the whole S.O.B..
:D

Wow I can see what your saying about if you should replace it or not. I did some searching and I found a lot of people saying that it is not needed. The 3rz-fe is a interference engine so if the timing chain breaks it will take the valves and possible the pistons with it. Do you still have your factory book? I will look at mine in the morning to see what it says. I also looked at the FSM and found that you have two chains that get replaced and it sounds like the water pump and oil pump are a lot more expensive.

Finally got my truck up and runnin again after almost 3 weeks.
Water pump was an easy install. Alternator was a PITA. New belts and hoses. All new fluids. New plugs and wires. New big ass interstate battery. 18" perma-cool electric fan since it wasn't much more $$$ than replacing the toasted fan clutch. Easy install, just time consuming. Hope it helps with the mpg. since the old fan ran all the time. Skipped the timing chain.
Total bill is just a little under $700 parts and misc. crap and 2 days of work. What a weekend :x , Just glad to not be drivin that crap volvo anymore.
