My old "tow rig search" thread got long and drawn out, and then Jenn got laid off from work and I put the search on hold. She has a few job prospects right now (an interview today and another one for something else next Tuesday) so I figured I'd start looking again.
Check this out... 1990 F350 dually ambulance, with a 7.3L diesel, 4WD, and only 11,000 miles. Camper and tow rig in one, and it has a CB system and loud speaker. The dude is asking $5500. I need to talk him down so I can also afford a turbo for it.
I'll name it Krankenwagen (http://www.dict.cc/german-english/Krankenwagen.html).

I always thought that an ambulance would make a great tow rig.

11,000 miles, wow, that alone is worth waiting on the turbo. Looks to be in decent shape. Hopefully he will come down that mileage is great.
I got your pm and if you do get it, yes, you can put all sorts of pics of my truck up in those glass cases. Thanks for asking first.

turbo kits are available and not too pricy for those model trucks. i have checked into one for mine, eventhough mine pulls well without one. now that i have the oil leak on mine fixed i am saving up for a turbo on mine. Hypermax, ATS, and Banks sells kits for these old trucks. very simple to install.

Thats Cool! We are looking to trade the Rav4 in for something. A MiniVan or Full Size SUV that can tow. That Van would be perfect, but not sure about 202K miles and 14K.
MiniVan for the luxuries and MPG or
Full Size SUV some luxuries shitty MPG but I can take the 4-runner off MVA and insurance and I dont have to worry about making it home.

I've been thinking a lot about buying a new daily driver that would be capable of towing about once a month. The rigs I've been considering are '03-'05 Tundras and '99-'03 Powerstrokes. (I don't really want a Dodge, even though I wouldn't mind a Cummins. Also, I don't want to buy a domestic 1/2 ton.) I drove a '99 extended cab, short bed, F250 7.3L today, with 4wd and auto tranny and 100,000 miles. I wish I was in a position to buy it today.
So I built a spreadsheet to compare the monthly costs of each, factoring things like monthly loan payment, cost of gas vs. diesel, fuel economy of both, etc. With monthly loan payment and fuel, an average Tundra would cost me $625 per month and a Powerstroke would be $657 per month.
Given that I don't currently have a car payment, and essentially only pay for fuel, the increase over my current expenses would be $403 for a Tundra and $435 for a Powerstroke. Not a huge difference between the two, and the Powerstroke would definitely do a better job towing.
I think I might have figured out where the first $435 is going once Jenn gets a job. :D

so how much do you have to sell the 94 for or are you adding that in the budget costs
BeaterToyota

Probably sell my '94 for ~$3000 (if I can get it running right) or trade it in and get ~$2500. I'd use that plus some cash down payment.

As you know I was in the same boat as you. I was trying to trade off the Harley even steven for a truck. I wanted a Diesel but after a string of rejections (I propositioned alot of truck owners to trade) I looked at older gassers. My buddy has a built Titan that tows his ****. He says it does fine until he hits a hill then his buddies Cummins blows him away. It's not just about 'racing up the mountain' the gasser will use more gas on inclines and it will be harder on the drivetrain. After he told me that I went forward on my Diesel Quest. I've heard alot of guys say the Cummins is an incredible motor but what it's wrapped in leaves alot to be desired. Dodge puts alot of cheap parts on their trucks. That Cummins saves them.
That said, I found an F250 diesel and learned alot about them so far. A couple times I felt like selling it to buy a gasser because there are so many differences and pain in the ass bullshit little problems that may arise. Thanks to the internet (mainly DieselSite.com) I decided this truck was not going to beat me, I accepted it as a learning challange and will eventually master it. These diesels have so much more potential than gassers and their resale is higher. I stuck with it.
Do keep in mind and add to your virtual costs, maintenace. The 7.3 holds 32 qts of coolant/water, 14qts of oil, glow plugs, expensives as all hell injectors, etc. There are about 20,000 sensors under the hood, well almost, and you'll have to learn what they all do. Once you learn how everthing under the hood works together you'll see it's not so scary. I already, with help, changed the balljoints (a common repair), glow plug relay, and need to fix a coolant leak and change serp belt, water pump, hoses, etc. Little things that you may still have to change on a gasser so don't worry so much about those things. One of the hardest parts is lying across the radiator to work on the engine, but I guess that would be the same for a gasser. A manual tranny is far better for towing but less common. For automatics, alot of guys use the 6.0 tranny cooler on their 7.3. The 7.3 is still the most sought after motor.
I'm not trying to freak you out about diesels just help you make an educated decision. Once you fix the little quirks and maintenance items the truck WILL outlast any gasser.
If you plan on spending a total of about $900 for exhaust, guages, intake, and a good tuner chip you'll get better mileage, tow better (out-tow any gasser with ease) and smoke most cars on the road. Speed and exhaust :D.
Do you have pics or a link to this 99? That's a split year and some changes were made, a late 99 is more desirable. I wanted a long bed bad and got one, however, if i were to choose again I may think about a short bed. My supercab long bed is one big bitch. If I back out of my driveway I have to do a two-pointer. I couldn't even imagine having a crewcab longbed .
Anyway, after scaring you I still say go with the diesel, it's a true work engine, just be prepared for higher repair costs.
Remember... Real Trucks Rattle.

It's at a used car lot in Warrenton, but they don't seem to update their site much so it's not on it. It's spotless though, with just a rip in the driver's seat that's been stitched up. For a DD/tow rig, the super cab short bed would be the way to go. I'm not sure if it's an early or late '99. If it's a late one it is exactly the truck I want. It's got buckets instead of a front bench, power windows, etc., etc.
Thanks for all the input Mike.

If I had a tow rig I'd be wheeling once a month. Right now I'm probably averaging 8 trips a year. That's really what I'm trying to decide; how much do I really need a diesel (there's really only one hill between here and Rausch, and it is right at Rausch).

My .02. I've had full size trucks with gas motors. When they get high mileage on them they get "TIRED" real quick. My last full size with a gas motor was a 1998 Dodge King Cab Short Bed 4x4 with a 360. When that thing hit 70K it was slam worn out. I pulled a 6x12 utility trailer with a king size matress and box springs on it when it had 83,000 on it and it was struggling on the inclines. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time and you are buying it with some miles already on it or you are gonna put alot of miles on it and using it to tow. Hands down go with the diesel if you can. Not to mention if your gonna buy something to use as a DD/Tow Rig the diesel is gonna get better gas mileage than a fullsize with a gasser. I get on average 15-16 mpg around town with my diesel. I towed a friends boat to Memphis last year. Boat weighed 7500 lbs. 820 miles to Memphis running 75-80 mph with the A/C on I got 12 mpg. No way a gasser is doing that.
In a nut shell. If a diesel is on your list that would be my suggestion. Again just my .02.

Depends on how long your going to keep it. Diesel Excurions are going pretty cheap with the price of fuel right now. For the price of the Rav4 new you could Get a TDI Jetta and a tow rig.

As far as a older Tundra goes don't do it... even with the 4.7 and an automatic it's only rated at 6500lbs... with a stock Toyota on a light trailer your right at the cusp for it's load rating... You could tow with it but it's really not recommended. I have thought about towing with a 1/2 ton before (ie silverado) but I've had friends with newer ones and they get to be a bear on the hills and you half to have the load set just right... the 1/2 tons really don't have the ass for distance towing or the HD components that last a little longer...
I would definately say go with a Diesel if your planning on towing... stay away from the old 6.9L Ford diesels as well as the older 6.2L Chevy diesels... The 7.3 is desireable but at the same time your going to pay for that engine so be careful... the Cummins 5.9 is probably more desirable (opinions vary) for towing but the dodge around it sometimes have issues. Also don't count out the 6.5L from chevy... They are a little under appreciated but I've towed with one now several times with no issues... It's also alot cheaper cause your not paying for a name as much... I get between 12 and 14 mpg towing my toyota to the trails... And where it's a Suburban it's got alot of ass to keep the load steady (8000lbs with trailer) The only thing with the 6.5's to watch is the PMD module... get a spare as soon as you get the truck cause it's a matter of time before it goes... (trust me... experience:eek:)
If I had to do it again I'd look for a extended cab Chevy 2500 with a 6.5L STD. Having a truck bed is handy sometimes. You'll end up paying less for one because it doesn't have the following that a cummins or Powerstroke have and it's rated about the same...
Just my .02

Yep, a 6.5 Chevy or GMC 2500 or Suburban has been on my list, too. They're not ruled out.
So I realized today that I had a major flaw in my spreadsheet: I hadn't calculated monthly payments correctly 'cause I hadn't included a down payment. That changes things by about $75 per month. So, as an example, a $15,000 Superduty, getting 16 mpg, with fuel at $3.30, would cost me $588 per month, or about $359 more than what I spend right now. That is totally doable.

That's another option. I'm thinking the truck above (at $12,500) would be great, and with about $2,000 down it would only cost about $215 per month for the loan. If I keep my '94 truck for daily use (paid for and good gas mileage), and buy something like that for towing, I'm only adding $215 per month to my expenses. I would put more than a $2000 down payment on a rig, but I'm reserving another $2000 for a trailer.
My beater is to the point that gas mileage sucks. So, fuel mileage wise, it wouldn't cost much more to tow it on any given trip than it would to drive it. In that sense, the monthly payment is all I need to tow my junk. Jenn just needs to find a job now. :D

Well don't loose sight of the real reason most of us tow our rigs to the trail. And there are several reasons...
Ussually more comfortable ride with a tow rig... even with the load and the heavy suspension.
You can carry more spare parts/tools with a tow rig then you can on a regular run of the mill truck.
And the number one reason...
When you break... when not if... you can always load up on a trailer and head home.
Again... just my .02.

Thats the biggest reason right there. The rest is just a bonus. I did it in the begining for safety reasons but opens for door for lots of other mods. The downside is now I can only drive my rig in a snow emergency or on the trails.
Jason my tow rig gets around 10 MPG towing. My rig has a fat ass though and my tow rig is slightly over max towing. I got around the same before my rig put on the extra weight though and really havent noticed much loss in power.

Sure has. Probably 'cause his email inbox got full in like an hour and he realized he fucked up putting $4200 on two different ads.
It was a '99 ext cab long bed 4wd Cummins, with 9x,xxx miles on it. Leather interior and manual transmission.

Yeah, I had looked at that a couple of times on there. I'm holding off again 'cause Jenn still hasn't found a solid job and I don't really want to spend much right now.

I'm trying to talk my Father into getting a newer Truck.. If I'm successfully he'll be selling his 2500 Ram..
Specs are: 1996 5.9 V8, 4x4, 135k miles, ext. cab, long bed.
Pending what I talk him to it may have the brake control in it and Plow hook ups.
Its a nice truck, I just want something new... (I mean he wants something newer, lol)

Nice truck, good mileage, good price. Might be higher than you want to spend but if you're towing two trucks out west next summer it fits the bill.
