On the 2008 1 ton trucks, Ford installed a finned aluminum rear diff cover for the Sterling 10.5". This is a great cheap mod for earlier trucks with the same axle. Aluminum disperses heat at a much faster rate then steel plus the fins create a larger surface area for the heat to escape.

My stock steel cover had a large area where the paint had peeled away from heat so I figured the new cover could only help while towing. I also believe the oil needed a change so this was the perfect time. Although it doesn't allow more oil it still cools the factory capacity much better.

The cover from an online Ford dealer was $45.00. Compared to a Mag-Hytec cover priced over $200, this was a steal. The only extra pieces needed are longer bolts (5/16x18x1 1/4") as the new cover is thicker. I opted for stainless allen heads with stainless flat and lock washers. The part number for the cover is 8C3Z-4033-A.

Get this Ford tech outta here. This is a Toyota site. :flipoff:

Speaking of tow rigs... I figured that driving to Moab we can each do two five hour shifts. That'll be 10 hours each. Not bad. Are we driving straight through? (I know I never got back to you the other day, but I'm totally down with this trip. I'm there.)
