This is primarily going to be my dd, but I need to be ready to hit the hills when "Z day" comes... You know, when the H1N1 vaccine turns everyone into zombies.

This is going to be a slow build, and I don't know how far I'll actually go with it. We'll see how things go.

For starters, I decided to ditch the running boards. Seems like they just got in the way. Took all of ten minutes to pull off both sides.

I'm going to black-out the entire truck. I started on the back bumper today. Got it sanded and primed. Tomorrow I'll throw a couple coats of semi-gloss black rattle can on it. Maybe I start on the front bumper tomorrow too.

Next will be the grill, all the emblems and then the wheels. All the trim needs attention too. The faded gray look doesn't do it for me. I'll get pics of the bumper(s) up tomorrow.

I hear ya man, just ordered 500 rds of .223 and another 500 here shortly.

Oh yeah, just sold our '97. It was a good truck for sure. I had planned on 3" of lift and 33's, a mild build. But plans change. I think the black out plan is a great idea, keep the pics coming.

I figure I can get all the chrome emblems off with a heat gun (to paint them), but what would I use to stick them back on? I don't want them to look like crap afterwards or fall off.

To remove the ones on the right and left lower, use ahair dryer to heat up the glue. Then use some heavyish fishing line to saw through the adhiesive behind the badge. Use your thumb to 'roll' any large amounts of glue off the body. Now use some Goof Off to remove the excess glue.

Home Depot has a really good two way tape by 3M. It's grey and 1"x4' maybe. It's pretty thin. Either use that or find a paint and body shop supply store, they'll have a real thin tape.

Before you paint, don't forget to sand the chrome on your badges then prime. You don't want to go through all that for the new paint to chip off. :)

Finished the rear bumper. Sanded it down, numerous coats of rustoleum primer and high performance semi-gloss. Turned out good enough for me. It really shows how faded the plastic trim is. I'll take care of all that later.

Good job. I like. If you black out everything it will be sweet.

Thanks guys. Looks like the front bumper and grill are next. I'll probably have to remove and disasemble the front bumper to get it done right. Hopefully this week(end), I'm taking off for Colorado next week.

I may be crazy, but now that I see the texture and color of the rattle can I used, I really want to rattle can the entire truck and herculine the bumpers and flares. I'm just a little shy when it comes to pulling the trigger on a job like that! Once it's done, it's done.

Probably won't even think about it 'til it warms up a bit. I just really want a not-so-shiny, blacked out truck. We'll see.

I did that to my 95.5...rustoleum flat black, cut 15% with acetone, and sprayed on with my HPLV gun. It wears well, but shows water spots. Took 3 hours to tape, and about 20 minutes per coat to spray...total cost....$9, plus tape

Finally found some time to start knocking things out. Started on the driver side wheels.

Before:

After a wire brush on a corded drill, some xylol, five coats of primer and 5 coats of semi-gloss black. I left the tires on and painted the inside of the rim as well. This was a couple days later with a little dirt on it:

Next will be the passenger side wheels, the front bumper, the trim and some tint = mall crawler complete! Then hopefully some decent sized aggressive tires. We'll see...

I also sprayed some flat black in the fender wells. Not a big deal, but a nice trick I used to use when I was detailing cars. Spray everything you can see in the fender well. "Cleans" things up pretty good!
