So I've been metal detecting for about a year and a half or so and I'm hooked! Found alot of cool stuff. Was wondering if any of you guys on here know of any old house sites that date back before or close to the Civil War? If so could I hunt them for stuff like this? Let me know.

Did you find that belt buckle, or is that just an example photo?

Not that we have cool shit in our yard, but you're more than welcome to check. Jenn walked by as I was reading your post and she has a couple ideas. Get in touch with her sometime.

That's pretty cool. What are the laws on that as far as where you can legally search and keep your findings? I'm sure you couldn't start walking around Antietam Battlefield with your metal detector.

That would be funny as hell to see though, you should try it.

I keep a log for everything I find. Don't need to but its good to keep track of. Can't hunt on any parks. Big no no!!

Do you use a GPS to log? That seems like it would work really well.

i'd go up to sandy hook, by harpers ferry, and up to the frederick watershed.

Well, I have to have permission. I like hunting old hose site that have fallen down and only a stone foundation or chimney is remaining but will hunt just about anywhere I know was a heavily travelled area during the war.

Old house's near me along the old coal canal transport and indian lands. We have found tons of stuff without metal detector's. I've always wanted to try one.

I was hooked after the first day. My friend and I are out there from sun up to sun down when we go.

I was at Spotsylvania Battlefield last October, there was a crew there from the National Park Service detecting in an area that the NPS plans to pave a walkway to the site of the "bloody angle". I talked to them, but they would not let me photograph any relics. But did let me view a bayonet they had pulled just minutes prior.

Here's a picture.

I'd shit my pants if I pulled a bayonet out of the ground. Closest thing to that was my buddy diggin a sword pommel. That was nice.

Growing up I went with my pop's he dug up two Eric. He found several coat buttons from differen states with alot of gold left on them. Also cannon balls even an US belt buckel with an 68 cal round ball in the middle. That buckel saved that guys life.
