View Full Version : RcRocs YJ build
So last year I traded the Samurai for a stock YJ to build for RC rocs. I'm building this **** with Kane Riccardi, (b4wscrambler on most boards). Kane won Class 1 last year, and is also very local to me. I'm copying the posts from another build thread.
On with the details:
Some spec's=
4.3 Chevy V6
Manual Valvebody T350
Flipped Dana 300 with NorthWest Fab cable shifters.
Used RE 4.5 lift
4.10s with a Detroit in the Dana 30
4.10s with a factory track-lock in a Explorer 8.8
33/12.5/15s

Flipped 300. I ended up having to pull the case again to clock the case up higher so we could have a completely flat belly pan.

I wanted to thank just a few of our sponsors that are helping out with this years build.
Thanks to John @ Kajobuilt for the cage that came out redtacular.
Mike @ AOI came threw again this year and installed the Detroit in the front axle.
Keven @ Commonwealth Rescue for the fire extinguisher mounts.
Eric @ Know Where 2 **** (KW2J) for any and all accessories we need.
Larry @ StickyLee.com for our soon to be installed stickers/numbers.
Don and Mitch @ Stout for Engineering support and for just being extra stout.
BFG for being out of stock of 33 KM2's.
The headers that came with the motor are from Advanced Adapters for a Toyota pickup. They would have worked fine for a passenger side drop t-case. We on the other hand are running driver side drop. The driver side header dumped right into the drive-shaft.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/toy43headers.jpg (http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/?action=view¤t=toy43headers.jpg)
I had to take pie cuts out of the collector to turn it away from the shaft and added a 3 bolt flange while I was at it. I added header wrap when I was done.
http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/MikesJunk1.jpg (http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/?action=view¤t=MikesJunk1.jpg)
Here is a helpful hint for when you are working with Header Wrap. Soak the wrap in water before you start. Cuts down on the fiberglass dust and helps it stretch. When it dries it will shrink some and get even tighter.
Lift kit is on, Custom Half skin BFG MT's are mounted. Axles are in, Fluids filled.

Work is moving right along. Mike should have the truck running on Saturday. Prerun on the 17th? Winch mount is done. http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/Easter032.jpg Mike built the tube fenders last weekend. http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/Easter031.jpg I had a old friend Dave Barrett @ Plasma Tech Customs fix the tabs that were welded on the radiator before we got it. Daves tig work is very nice. I think I spent more on gas to get to his place in Hampstead than what he charged to do the work. http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk300/ballpeenracing/O10%20YJ/Easter030.jpg http://www.plasmatechcustoms.com/
Thanks to Brett (HeavyChevy) for being our second truck on the comp course.
There is a minor list of things to do, but no major surprises.

At the first comp, we took 3rd out 13 trucks. We lost reverse as a climbing gear during the second course, and the transmission got progressively worse throughout the day. The brakes also got worse as well. We knew both of these would be issues going in. The transmission will get rebuilt this week, and we have some brake upgrades in mind to help.

Transmission is rebuilt. Thanks to Southern Automatic Transmission Service for the rebuild.
We upgraded the brakes. Out went the stock 2.5l booster and MC, and in went a 95 4.0L Dual Diaphragm booster and Dodge 1500 1 1/4 Bore MC. The 95 4.0 MC with a 1" bore just couldn't do it. We also ditched the dinky rear 8.8 calipers and installed GM metric calipers. Speedway sells a Big Bore 2 3/4" piston caliper, however after bleeding the system and testing the pedal, this happened:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs508.snc3/26685_594638542811_38003555_34403924_2242553_n.jpg
So a quick run to Advanced and now there are just standard metric GM calipers in the rear.
We tied for 2nd after the shootout. Rcrocs uses your first course scores as a tie breaker. The guy beat us by 1 point on that course.
New trans worked great, brakes were better than ever.
Some videos of our runs.
This is A-3, we had the lowest score with a -4. I thought we could have cleared the cone on the fourth gate, but we decided to play it safe and take it. I think every team hit that gate.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq5QAx4DdVw
This is A-1. It was our worst course with a 13. All was going fine until we got hung up in the loose dirt and rocks going for gate 5. We ended up hitting a gate trying to bump through. We finished with 3 seconds to spare.

RcRocs 2011 is right around the corner.
New upgrades for this year:
Added a new set of 33x12.50 BFG KM2s mounted on a set of Champion Beadlocks.

The torque converter was swapped out for one with a different stall (2300-2600).
Spent last weekend cleaning up as much of the older wiring as I could and all the gauges are now hooked up :pimpin:

Ended up winning the series again.
**** is retiring from Class 1 and getting reworked for Class 2.
Plan is Toyota Axles, front and rear, 37s, with either E-lockers or ARBs, and a 4:1 kit.
I'd like to reuse my tacoma axles, otherwise I'll build a set of Rock Assault axles.
Congrats on the series win!:clap::clap: Good luck in class 2! Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.
I am not sure if I will be competing in RcRocs. The **** will be built for that class in mind. Kane is building a new flat fender and more than likely I will spot for him. I do hope to have the rig ready for the Club Comp next year.
I liked having the rig on 33s, but I felt hampered by the tire size/front axle strength.
It looks like my truck is head to MA, and I am keeping the axles, wheels, tires, so those are going on this winter.
Plan is SUA, 37s, and Tacoma width axles. Hyline front will let me keep it low. Uptravel will probably be extremely limited, probably 4"
