I have a 1999 2.7 TRD Tacoma with 88,000 miles on it and Yesterday when I was driving the RPM’s started just going up but the truck would not accelerated like it normally does. It did not matter which gear I went into the RPM’s would redline before I actually accelerated any.
So my question is: Does this sound like its definitely my clutch/pressure plate going bad or could I get lucky and it be only a minor problem….? Any suggestions/advice would help thanks.
p.s. I have smoked the clutch a few times………. :smt102

That kinda sounds like the clutch is fawked. You should have felt it slipping before it got that bad that it doesnt grab at all.

yeah its the clutch, ive gone through 3 in 3 years, its the clutch.
hey eric, are you sure he woulda felt that clutch slipping? i was alway under the impression that hydro clutches give little to no warning when they go but the cable/spring or whatever the other kind is are the ones that will slip real bad when they need replacement. the only reason i ask is cause all 3 of mine have been dog shit dead when i replaced them but i never got any slipping or even funny noises outta them, the only reason i knew they were done was cause i had burned em up (literally, black smoke and everything) on the trail

My wife's uncle owns a transmission shop in Richmond so he will do the install....gotta love the family connection....and I was going to get a clutch from Marlin Crawlers, they don't have a ceramic clutch for a 1999 though. I was also going to change out the master and slave cylinder.
As far as it slipping my didn't really slip either it just suddenly did not want to accelerate. I can still drive it but I have not been because I do not want to mess up the flywheel.
The first time I went to paragon though I really smoked the shit out of it
(I think Ted got a pic of it) that place is a lot more fun/challenging than GWNF.
shortyv6...do you have a shop/person that you recommend for re-gearing

lance @ iron pig in fredericksburg for the gearing
thought marlin makes a great clutch kit, since its not ceramic, go to www.lukclutch.com and get theirs, its an OEM toyota unit for about 1/2 the price.
as far as the master/slave cyls. go, do the slave, the master should be good for a long time, like i said ive roasted 3 clutches since ive had my junk, replaced the slave when i did the last clutch, but on a 99 (same year as mine) i dont see any need to replace the master, TBH i probly didnt even need to change out the slave, but i did anyway cause it was only like 40 bux

I've always been able to tell on my truck when it was getting crappy. It would start grabbing a bit higher. Then on harder shifts you could feel it slip just a bit. Mine never made it past that. Having your own shop to work in has its bennies
FYI Luk clutchs kick butt. Thats whats going in next time. I got 3 years on my Marlin clutch now and its starting to get kinda crappy.

well if you didnt feel it slipping and then felt it kind of all of a sudden it could be a pressure plate problem, in any case you need a clutch, pressure plate and dont forget to maching the flywheel or you can blow out a brand new clutch, while your in there a new throwout bearing and pilot bearing should be installed, slave cylinders to if its internal
