my wife gen 3 runner(3.4ltr), sheered off the key on the crankshaft, and the result it a wobbled out crank pully and and ovaled crankshaft end with no keyway left.
can i just replace the crank and bearings from the bottom or should i get a short block for ease. either way i hve to pull the motor to do the work.
any one ever run into this?

I'm pretty sure it was really common on the mitsubishi motors in the little pickups. Instead of swapping out the block, people would weld the keyway hole. Not the best fix but most people opted for that instead of the block swap. Good uck dude.

Happened to a friends 4runner. Slot wasnt to bad so he JB welded the keyway in and put bearing race set on the crank and pulley with locktight on the bolt. He drove it for some time before getting rid of it.
Pretty sure Hoodlum had a issue with the crank pulley coming off his Taco and messing up the crank or maybe to bolt snapped of.
If the crank bolt isnt tight it puts ALOT of stress on that keyway. The keyway is to locate the crank puller only.

It was fairly common b/c people wernt tightening the crank pulley bolt enough after doing a timing belt. Toyota also came out with a revised version of the crank pulley bolt/washer.

someone not tightening the bolt correctly seams to be the concensus. its a shame i cant blame myself. ive been putting off doing the timing belt for but 6 mos now. i guess time to buy a crank or short block.... damn
