View Full Version : Labor Day Weekend Run

I'm hitting Shoe Creek Labor Day weekend. This can work as a day trip for those in VA. I'm camping though. This is not a hard trail, and is stock friendly, see my writeup in the GWNF trails section. It's just something to do. I haven't decided what days to run, I've got the 3-day, so whatever day(s) others can make it, I'm game.
Post up if you are interested and what day(s) you'd like to be there. I can provide directions and/or GPS coords to whoever needs them.

You could see if Big levels is open also. It's not to far from shoe. Shoe is not a real long trail that you could spend more then a day on going around a few times.

We could hit Big Levels as well. There's more "trail" there, but most of it just fire road, not that Shoe Creek is good, but, well, you get the idea. Some guys from a local club are hitting Big Levels this coming weekend I think, so I should get a report from them if it's open. I just want to do some wheeling without driving forever, and I'm tired of the Harrisonburg area. If folks are interested, we'll hit both. I don't care, I just wanna get out of here for a weekend.

Shoe Creek is in GWNF, but not close to where we were before. Google Charlottesville to get an idea, it's close to there. A good drive for you, longer than Harrisonburg. I think I put GPS coords on my post under the trails section if you want specifics.
Hope you can make it.

I wouldn't mind checking this out. I have to work Sunday at 7am so my days free would be either Friday or Saturday.

Due to expected weather, it looks like this will be a day trip on Sunday.
ebutler and JasonCM, from your posts it looks like Sunday's bad for you guys. Sorry to change gears at the last minute, but I'd rather wheel after the tropical storm has made it's way through.
If you guys, or anyone else for that matter, are in for a day run this Sunday, post up, and I'll get you directions and/or coords.

I could probably be persuaded for a day in the mud. Never been to GWNF before. A day trip from DC is managable.

Not a whole lot of mud to be found at Shoe Creek. Not a whole lot of rocks either... All the same, it's a decent trail, and somewhere to go that you don't find a run at every weekend.
If you're interested, Mapquest or Google Maps should be able to get you to the Montebello Fish Cultural Station(where they obviously teach fish to speak French.) We meet up close to there.
If you're in for this, I'll get you some GPS coords or road directions and we'll meet you there.
Post up and let me know so we know to pick you up and/or wait on you.
Look forward to having you in the group.

I am definitely interested. What time are you thinking about heading out in the morning and how many trucks are going?

We're leaving Hampton Roads at 7:00am Sunday. I'm thinking it will take use @3.5 hours to get there. I can give you directions to meet us there, or you can meet up with us along 64 if you have a place in mind to meet.
If you are sure you're going, we'll make sure we make arrangements to meet up with you.
Let me know...

Hate you guys can't make it. We've got three TTORA trucks going, and a few from my local club. Should be fun, but might be a bit wet!
And I HATE mud!

I'm leaving Capital Hill at about 6:30 am. Mapquest and google maps said any where between about 3.3 and 4 hrs via interstates 66 and 81. We're planning on meeting up around the trail head at 10:30. We could meet up somewhere in Arlington or Fairfax along 66 and caravan if you would like.

Hey, glad some others can join!
We're planning on picking up at least one more truck at around 8:30(IMO, it'll be closer to 9:00) at the rest stop on 64 W past Richmond. You're welcome to meet up with us there. Trust me, when we roll in, you can't miss us.
For those meeting us there, we'll meet you at the intersection of Crabtree Falls Expressway and the road to turn off to the Fish Cultural Station; there's a little clearing there by the stream.
One of these days I'm actually going to visit that Fish Cultural Station. I've always wanted to see what Fish Culture is like.
Anyone who is going for sure, PM me your cell number if you haven't already, so I can keep in touch if we're running early or late.
See you in the morning!
Kyle
I just heard from Ace, the FJ Cruiser Team is going to make this event. You can take a test drive in the FJ Cruiser. In the past events they have have a cook out for the group.
Lets have a big trun out for this event.

Get to beat up Toyota's rig AND get fed? Hey, I'm in on that!
Oops wrong post again....
:D
For anyone that was wondering, this run DID happen. We had five Toyotas, which was better than I expected.
The Runners that went, localmotion and kcebes, took a hard line through a rock garden with only a bumper scuff and a dead mud flap to show for it. Good driving guys!
Snapnski was there as well, with another Tacoma and myself. That, and a bunch of Heeps.
I had fun, hope everyone else did too. I didn't snap many pix, so I've got none to post.

Are you going to test drive an FJ at the fall colors run?

Hecull, or any of you guys that went,
were the second half of those pics all legal shoe creek stuff or was there some leaving of the trail into other property. I'm going camping at crabtree falls and have never run the shoe creek trail, it looks like fun. Just wondering if I its worth to make the drive with the 4runner. Its not a fun ride on the highway in that thing.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
If you see a picture with a Toyota in it, then it's legal wheeling there. To the best of my knowledge, the only place anyone went that was off limits was a rock close to the bottom most folks call Slick Rock. There are obvious(but passable) tank traps getting to it, though no signs; some of the Heeps with us ran(or tried to run, with various amounts of carnage) that.
It's not a "serious" trail. I think a Subaru could make it through 99% of it. It's still fun in it's own way and worth a roll-through if you're going there to camp anyway.
