I just heard from Ace, the FJ Cruiser Team is going to make this event. You can take a test drive in the FJ Cruiser. In the past events they have have a cook out for the group.

Lets have a big trun out for this event.

The Toyota Fall Colors Ride will be held at George Washington National Forest just west of Harrisonburg, VA on October 20-22. The trails are very stock & mild lift friendly.

The National Forest is located about 20 minutes west of Harrisonburg, VA on Route 33. The campsite will be at the meadow by Skidmore Lake off Rt 33.

Follow Route 33 west out of Harrisonburg for approx. 20 minutes. You will start going up the mountain and hit all the "switchbacks". Going up the switchbacks there will be a left turn (It is the ONLY left turn with a turning lane). Take that left and follow the gravel road down the mountain. At the bottom of the mountain there will be a concrete bridge. Turn left immediately after the bridge and you will enter a small meadow. To the right you will see a trail that leads to a large meadow where we will be camping.

Sorry about the vague directions. I will be making a scouting trip out there next month and I'll post better directions with mileage.

This is not going to be a "hardcore" wheeling trip, as there are no hardcore trails at GWNF. The Fall Colors Ride is more of a casual "meet and greet" and scenic trailride. All 4wd Toyota's are welcome. So come join the fun, see old buddies and meet all the guys you've been "web wheeling" with.

Is there going to be enough room at the meadow for everyone to camp ? More people from the fjcruiser forum are planning are coming to this event.

locknload
09-14-2006, 10:39 AM
The meadow goes pretty far to the left and up into the trees on the right. There's even a second meadow on the right through the trees.
The biggest problem will be dealing with the tall grass from all the rain. If I come Friday I may bring my weedeater.

Ace_Laserna
09-14-2006, 12:10 PM
I talked to Brady Clark with the Trail Team. I'm going to give them a more precise headcount a week before the event. They plan on bringin goodies for us, so they need to know how many are coming.

I'm bringing the Taco and the Runner for this trip. Probably going to be hauling a bunch of crap up there so I'm just gonna throw it in the back of the Taco. I'm bringing firewood, but if you guys could also bring a bundle or so, we would definitely be covered on firewood.

I'm going to head up there in about 2-3 weeks with a mower and weedeater to trim up the meadow.

We should have enough space up there. There are actually 2 meadows connected. If not, there are plenty of campsites along that fireroad.

Alright, I'm off to Big Dogs. Later

Show up whenever you can. People will be up late if you want to arrive at midnight.

Here are some directions from the beginning of this thread. They sound sort of vague, but they are actually very accurate and they shoud get you there without any problems:

So ive got a pretty good story about steaming coils of poo and oblivious campers. My brother, who will be at Fall Colors, and some friends went to Rausch Creek yesterday and the day before. Well, him and his two friends Ryan and Josh all had to take a dump, and they didnt feel like walking up the the port-a-potties. They found one of those astroturf welcome mats and they all decided to take a dump on it. One of the fellow campers, who I will not release his name do to total embarrasment, was being quite annoying. Nick and his friends did a little spying and found out that whenever he entered or exited his tent, he always crawled. They waited for him to go to sleep and placed the floor mat infront of his tent. The next morning when they woke up, the mat was gone and the fellow camper wouldnt fess up to seeing or walking through the poo.

nothing too major, there may be very minimal difference depending on where you mount it in relation to how much of the body metal is close but I highly doubt that it will affect it, more than likely it wont need much tweaking from the start.
This test/adjustment will not affect how well you recieve but how far you will be able to transmit.

Eric_N
10-12-2006, 12:15 AM
Im going to be mounting the antenna in almost the same location on the 91. I did notice that I could recieve a lot better than I can transmit. How do you tune the antenna anyway? I have an original firestik, not the one with the little nob you can turn on the top of it.

A CB radio does come on handy when traveling in groups of tucks. It will cost you what ever it take to gas up your truck, and buy food for camping.

It's your first trip out, so you have to cook enough food and bring enough beer for the whole group. :D

I don't have an extra CB, but I'll have a CB in my truck. I'll try to remember to bring some walkie-talkies and let you borrow one. That way you can be in the loop a bit when we're on the trails.

Bring whatever food you want for yourself. People do end up sharing sometimes, but it's not required.

As far as gas is concerned, I can usually drive from NOVA, wheel all weekend, and get back home all on one tank. If you're concerned just fill up in Harrisonburg when you first get down there.

Other than food and gas it doesn't cost a thing.

Steve and I ran up there yesterday afternoon and cut the grass in the meadow. She's good to go. I'll be leaving Fredericksburg around 6 a.m. Friday. I want to get up there early to make sure no one else snags the meadow.
Amy is not coming up. She has to help with homecoming at school, so I'll just have the runner for this trip. I guess I'll have to pack Alan's camping gear in the runner and throw the wood in Alan's truck.

kturner
10-18-2006, 09:00 PM

Were you still going to post better directions with milege like you said?

The National Forest is located about 20 minutes west of Harrisonburg, VA on Route 33. The campsite will be at the meadow by Skidmore Lake off Rt 33. This is a "primitive" campsite. There will be no porta potties or potable water, so make sure you pack accordingly.

Follow Route 33 west out of Harrisonburg. You will start going up the mountain and hit all the "switchbacks". Going up the switchbacks there will be a left turn (It is the ONLY left turn with a turning lane). From the intersection of I-81 and Rt 33, it is approximately 21.3 miles to the turn. Take that left and follow the gravel road down the mountain approximately 2.3 miles. At the bottom of the mountain there will be a concrete bridge. Turn left immediately after the bridge and you will enter a small meadow. To the right you will see a trail that leads to a large meadow where we will be camping.

Intersection of I-81/Rt. 33 West to the Shell station is 2.6 miles
Shell station to left turn onto gravel road is 18.7 miles
follow gravel road for 2.3 miles to meadow.

I will be going into town and meeting people Friday afternoon at 17:00 at the Shell station.

I will also be going back into town to meet people at the Shell station Saturday morning. I will be there 07:45-08:15. We have to leave the Shell station no later than 08:15 to give people time to set up camp before the groups head out.

I hope you dont mean for fall colors. Last year at RC I think 6 toys were there. There was banners and stickers made and now they sit in my garage

Yeah it was good to meet everyone, like alot of people have said there was a ton of trucks, was unreal. Steven and I had a blast, my wife however did not like my new rocker modification, but she half expected it. I did not take as many pictures as I'd hoped, but I will post the ones I took when I get a chance.
